If you're downloading files from the Net, then you should be sure to protect yourself first with a good anti-virus utility. Viruses are small programs that can be contained in any type of executable file that you download. Their effects can range from mischievous pranks to serious damage of your computer.
Before you fork over $40 or so for a commercial product, check out one of the excellent free anti-virus utilities that we list below.
The programs we list here will either clean and/or scan your computer for viruses. And be sure that you check with the provider of the anti-virus program that you download for periodic updates, as new viruses are appearing all the time on the Web.

ViruSafe WEB - Essential freeware virus scanner plug-in, compatible with all Web browsers. Checks for viruses every time you download files from the Internet. Whenever you download a file, ViruSafe WEB will automatically scan it for viruses, before it is saved to the disk. ViruSafe WEB can scan programs, ZIP files and Word documents.
Anyware Antivirus - An excellent free utility, Anyware will scan your computer for viruses (and let you delete any infected files). Anyware detects all the latest viruses, including Polymorph, Stealth, Trojan Horse, Multi-Partite, E-mail, Internet and macro viruses. Note: this free utility is a scanner only; for virus-cleaning capabilities, you must upgrade to the commercial product. Available for Windows and DOS.
F-PROT antivirus utility - Data Fellows is giving away the DOS version of their excellent F-PROT anti-virus utility. This version is free for home users.
AntiVirus E-mail Update Notification - If you want to protect yourself against computer viruses, you must do more than simply download an anti-virus program. You need to keep it current, with the latest updates. With this free service, you will receive an automatic notification by E-mail whenever there is a new release of the antivirus software package(s) you use. You need register once and may send a cancel command at any time.
VirusScan - Get a free evaluation copy of this classic anti-virus utility that provides "an array of scanning features that keep your system clean, mean and virus-free." VirusScan detects viruses from all sources, including floppy disks, Internet downloads, E-mail attachments, Intranets, shared files, CD-ROM and online services. For Windows 3.1, 95, NT, as well as DOS and OS/2.
Bootminder - Direct download: 106 kilobytes. This free utility will warn you if a floppy is in your A: drive when closing down Windows. This way, you won't start up with the floppy still in it. Result: no boot-virus infection. Bootminder runs in the background until you forget to remove your floppy. For Windows.
